What is a Handicap bet?
To start, we will explain (for the more novice) what a handicap bet means. Basically, it is the difference in goals (for football) or points (for basketball) between the 2 teams that will determine whether your Handicap bet is winning or losing.
There are two types of Handicap bets:
- Positive Handicap bet (M + 1) : in this case, the team on which you bet starts with 1 goal in advance.
- Negative Handicap bet (H-1) : here, the team on which you bet leaves with 1 goal late.
Example: Take the PSG – OM match. If you bet on OM with Handicap H + 1, this means that OM starts with 1 goal in advance. On the other hand, if you bet on PSG with Handicap H-1, this means that PSG starts with 1 goal behind. In the first case, your bet wins if OM draws or wins (0-0, 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, etc.). And in the 2nd case, your bet is winning if the PSG wins by at least 2 goals away (2-0, 3-0, 3-1, 4-0, 4-2).
In the example above, you could also have done the opposite by playing OM with the H-1 or PSG with the H + 1.
The goal difference may be greater if the bookmaker allows it. That is, you can play Handicap-2 or Handicap + 2, etc. The principle stays the same.
